Flu Treatments from a Primary Care Medical Clinic

Are you looking into your flu treatment options? Understand that primary care medical clinics offer flu treatments. While treatment does not get rid of the flu, it does help to ease the symptoms associated with this illness.

Primary care medical clinics

While there are different types of primary care providers, all of them are able to offer their patients treatment to address their flu symptoms. Common flu symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle aches, chills, fatigue, and nausea.

While at-home care treatment is important, sometimes it is necessary to make an appointment with a medical professional in order to get more effective medical treatment. At-home treatment includes resting, drinking plenty of fluids, taking over-the-counter cough medications, sitting in a steamy bathroom, and running a humidifier.

Flu-related complications

According to the Mayo Clinic, those who have an increased risk of flu-related complications include those under the age of one, those over the age of 65, pregnant women, obese women, those who have a weakened immune system, and those who are living with one or more chronic medical conditions, e.g., asthma, diabetes, heart disease.

The information below outlines how primary care medical professionals treat a patient who comes into a clinic because they have the flu.

Prescription medications, antiviral drugs

Some flu patients will be given prescription medications in order to help lessen their flu symptoms. Prescription medications can also help prevent them from experiencing flu-related complications. The reason why prescription medications help flu patients is that the medications help the patient's immune system to better deal with the virus. Medications also allow for a faster recovery, which is what every patient wants when they have the flu. In order for patients to experience maximum effectiveness, any medications should be taken within 48 hours after the onset of flu symptoms.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there are four different antiviral drugs that are recommended for the treatment of influenza: oseltamivir, peramivir, zanamivir, and baloxavir marbolix. These antiviral drugs can be given to patients intravenously or patients can take them in pill or liquid form. Antiviral drugs are different from antibiotics, as antibiotics can only be used to fight against bacterial infections but the flu is a viral infection.

Whenever someone goes to a primary care medical clinic for flu treatment, it is essential that they let the medical professional know if they have been diagnosed with any other health issues, as this can make a difference when it comes to which medication is going to work best for treating their flu symptoms.

Are you currently in need of flu treatment?

Now that it is understood that there are treatment options for those diagnosed with the flu, all one needs to do in order to undergo treatment is to visit a primary care medical clinic. The medical professionals who work at this type of facility are well-trained when it comes to treating flu patients.
