A Guide to Allergy Testing

Allergy testing can help with better management and treatment of debilitating allergies by identifying substances that trigger allergic reactions. Many people experience ongoing discomfort due to allergies without knowing the exact cause. However, testing provides clear answers and helps create a plan for reducing symptoms.

Types of allergy tests

Allergens may include pollen, pet dander, certain foods, insect stings, and medications. When exposed to an allergen, the immune system may overreact, causing distressing symptoms such as sneezing, itching, hives, swelling, or breathing difficulties. With allergy testing, a general practitioner or internal medicine doctor can help determine which allergens cause reactions in the body, making it easier to avoid triggers and find the right treatment.

There are many different types of tests designed to detect reactions to specific allergens. The most common tests include:

Skin prick test

A skin prick test is one of the most widely used methods for identifying allergies. Small amounts of potential allergens are placed on the skin, usually on the forearm or back. A tiny prick is made to allow the allergens to enter the skin. A small, raised bump appears at the test site if an allergic reaction occurs. This test is quick, and results are usually available within 15 to 20 minutes.

Blood test

A blood test measures the amount of allergy-related antibodies, known as immunoglobulin E (IgE), in the bloodstream. This test is useful for people who cannot undergo skin testing due to skin conditions or certain medications. Although results take longer than a skin test, a blood test can provide helpful information about allergic reactions.

Patch test

A patch test is used to diagnose contact allergies, such as reactions to metals, fragrances, or certain skin care products. Small patches containing allergens are placed on the skin, usually on the back, and left for 48 hours. Over the next few days, the provider checks for reactions to identify any delayed allergic responses.

Elimination diet

An elimination diet may be necessary to identify suspected food allergies. This diet involves removing certain foods from the diet for a period of time. Then, the provider will have the patient slowly reintroduce them while monitoring for symptoms.

What to expect during allergy testing

The process of allergy testing depends on the type of test being performed. Before testing, a general practitioner or internal medicine doctor may ask about symptoms, medical history, and known allergies.

During a skin prick or patch test, mild itching or redness may occur at the test site. Blood tests require a small blood sample and do not cause an immediate reaction. Careful tracking of symptoms is important for an elimination diet to identify problem foods.

Managing allergies after testing

After identifying the allergens, the general practitioner or internal medicine doctor creates a plan to manage symptoms. Strategies may include:

  • Avoiding known allergens when possible
  • Using antihistamines or other medications to control symptoms
  • Receiving immunotherapy (allergy shots) for long-term relief

Allergy management depends on the severity of symptoms and individual health needs.
